Barack Obama “Beer Summit” Will Fail Unless He, Gates Publicly Apologize to Sgt. James Crowley

(7.30.09) — The Barack Obama – Henry Louis Gates – Sgt. James Crowley meeting at the White House is doomed to failure unless Obama and Gates publicly apologize to Crowley.

According to public opinion polls, the majority of America feels that Barack Obama has mishandled the situation, particularly when he answered a question about Gates’ arrest at his press conference last week.

Additionally, new polling shows that approximately three times as many respondents feel that Gates is more at fault for his arrest than is Crowley.

With those statistical dynamics at work, irregardless of any other factors, it seems almost certain that this “PR Diplomacy” event at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue will not achieve what Team Obama desires unless the president and the professor apologize — for the cameras — to the Cambridge cop.

Should Obama and Gates choose not to do this, look for more fallout in the polls. Representative Thaddeus McCotter [R-MI] is prepared to introduce a House resolution asking for Obama to apologize if the president does not do so of his own volition, and McCotter has at least two other signers/co-sponsors for the resolution already.

The public wants those it considers at fault to show contrition. Beers and smiles will not be enough to complete the narrative for the nation.

Let’s hope that Gates and Obama are amenable to tabling their egos for the good of the country and their own reputations today. If not, look for further slippage in the approval ratings of an already-sinking Obama.
