What universities would you recommend for pursuing graduate school in public relations?

I know this is not the place to ask, but I am curious as to if anyone has any suggestions of universities to look towards in the US for a masters in public relations. If not I just completed an undergraduate degree in Human Kinetics and Sport Management, and am wondering which direction to head in next.

Do it in a big city, where you can use your university contacts and parlay that into a job. i.e. NYC, LA or DC. (with all the government things in DC, there are a lot of PR jobs)

How does my wife break into the PR industry, particularly in fashion?

My wife has a BA in Public Relations, but she graduated a few years ago and never really had a chance to use her degree. She has been working retail fashion for a few years and would like to incorporate that into the PR field. Any info you can give is appreciated. Thanks

I am a high school student looking into public relations and I want to go to a college that will help me prepare the most for life. Please help (:

You are better off looking for an ancillary field such as advertising, psychology, political science, pre-law or journalism. PR is the process of making lies sound pretty and protecting rich people’s r-sez when they mess up. You will need more knowledge, skills and approaches than you can learn in college from people who have been lying all their lives. It’s a bogus major, like sociology and art history. You’ll never get hired with it.

If you don’t believe me, get off your chair and go interview people who are successful in PR in your city. Ask them how they got there and what they would advise you to do. If you are seriously thinking about that work, you need to develop the solid brass attitude to go in and ask tough questions.

How to Become a Publicist (from second link):
"A bachelor degree is a common requirement for those interested in public relations specialist jobs. A degree in public relations is preferred by many employers. However, a degree may be based in business, communications or even journalism, but employers will be looking for candidates with strong communication skills above all else"

With being a fashion publicist I’d take the advice up there, but you may want to look into fashion too. Just so you know what you’re talking about.

A publicist is a person whose job is to generate and manage publicity for a public figure, especially a celebrity, a business, or for a work such as a book or film. Most top level publicists work in private practice, handling multiple clients.

In the world of celebrities, unlike agents or managers, publicists typically take a monthly fee for serving a client (whereas agents and managers tend to take a percentage of their client’s gross income). Publicists can be at local, regional or national level. They can also have special expertise in areas such as entertainment or literary publicity.

One of the publicist’s main function is to generate press coverage on behalf of clients and to serve as the bridge between clients, their public and media outlets. A publicist writes press releases, manages campaigns and performs other public relations functions. It usually takes many years to develop the media contacts, experience and relationships necessary to be an effective publicist.

Some publicists specialize in representing ‘ordinary’ members of the public to procure the maximum possible fee for stories they wish to sell to newspapers, television stations and magazines.
